Demolition(?) Work Near Valentine Apartments

Just north of the Valentine Apartments on Broadway is a two story building of a similar vintage with a glazed terra cotta facade. There appears to have been some dismantling on the back side. Has anyone heard if this building is in the process of being demolished?

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

Does anyone know for sure that this building is coming down? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I thought vertical cracks were signs of foundation settlement and not necessarily a threat to a building's structural integrity. The only cracks I've noticed in this building are vertical. (I would need to ...

Re: Longfellow/Dutch Hill Redevelopment

i think that's generally true around the country.  Most places with the "Dutch" monicker weren't referring to folks from the Netherlands but rather German (Deutsch) speaking folks.  The Pennsylvania "Dutch" are descendants of German settlers and Dutchtown in St. Louis was one of...

I'm not doubting you, but could you supply a source for that bit of trivia? I need a source in order to repeat it.

Thanks

Re: KC in TV and Movies

Don't know if this counts. In the movie True Grit, Rooster Cogburn (AKA John Wayne) says he lost his eye in the civil war in the battle of Lone Jack. That was a real battle in a real town just a little East of here. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Lone+Jack+Missouri&...

The delay in construction is just awful. That corner really needs some help.
I'm not sure what is holding up Gomers future expansion as well.
Perhaps the sour economy. It's not doing much for the small storefronts in downtown and midtown.

Re: Poll: Power & Light District Dress Code

The act of observation changes the that which is observed. This bit of wisdom comes from quantum mechanics, but it seems to be true where the public eye is concerned. Let's pretend for the sake of argument that the Cordish dress code had gone unnoticed, or at least unremarked. Under these conditions...

I am not calling you a liar, and I'm too lazy to do the research, but how is that possible? That's more than six days? Besides eating, how did he shit and piss? I'm just repeating what's in the KC star book. I gave the page number. Check it out yourself. I think there might be a copy at the KC Publ...

Re: Status and future of the River Market area??

I think he was trying to make the point that Bo Lings is a little higher rent than the typical City Market square, counter-top type place.  I disagree, however, and I think Bo Lings adds a much needed component to the market itself as well as the neighborhood around it. That is exactly what I'm s...

I think everybody got a little piece of it correct. Grand Slam attracts them. A section of street with no eyeballs on it gives them a place to work. Proximity to Paseo bridge gives them a way to get away.

I hope you come to Kansas City. I think there's a shortage of small-scale, pedestrian-friendly infill. We also have lots of places in which to do it. I hope you've looked at areal view of downtown (river to 31st).

Yeah, I haven't found the service or kitchen to be anywhere near the consistency of their other locations.  Its also telling when its the only place you can walk right into during weekend market time without a wait.  I don't think it's a good fit for the market square. Think about. Barbecue, pizza,...

Forget tourism. I read recently about a Northeast manufacturer who moved his manufacturing plants to the US from overseas because escalating transportation costs made domestic manufacture cheaper than importing. We're in the center of the country which makes transportation costs about the same for m...

It was supposed to have been a condo tower, but that fell through. I don't know if it was because of the vociferous crossroads opposition, or for reasons unrelated to the opposition.
